Link Icons
I’m experimenting with integrating some link icons into my blog that give visual clues as to where the link goes without having to actually hover over the link. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
- indicates a link to Wikipedia
- indicates a link to Google
- indicates a link to Google Maps
- indicates a link into iTunes
- indicates a link to an image (on this site)
- indicates a link to an audio file (on this site)
I’m struggling with how granular to get with this. On the one hand, I think it’s useful to have these icons, but at some point it becomes too much for the user to remember…and may even become distracting. Has anyone else experimented with this?

This is pretty cool. I’ve considering using icons as visual rhetoric, but essentially am too lazy to collect the icons.

Michael- Thanks for your feedback. The images weren’t that hard to find actually; Google Image Search is a pretty cool resource!
