Apple iPhone Battery Life

January 21st, 2007

The iPhone has taken some punches lately regarding it’s battery life. It’s also rumored that the battery is not replaceable. I found the following statement buried at the bottom of the iPhone Technical Specifications page:

Technical specifications are subject to change. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less. Up to 5 hours of talk time depends on network configuration. Up to 16 hours of battery life refers to music playback. Up to 5 hours of battery life is based on H.264 1.5-Mbps video at 640-by-480 resolution combined with 128-Kbps audio. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

This seems to imply that the batteries will be replaceable. iPodBatteryFaq.com supports this implication.

Of course batteries are replaceable. The controversy is about the fact that you can’t replace the batteries yourself. You’ll have to send in the iPhone to Apple to have them changed like the way it is with iPods.

This is not a good thing because while you can stay without your iPod for a couple of days but doing without your phone might leave many people crippled.

Manu – Thanks for your comments. What you say is true. However, there are some who are not making this distinction. It is being stated, without qualification[1, 2, 3] that the battery is not replaceable. period. Like you said, this is not true.
